The Pentecost Window
| Moving to the opposite side of the sanctuary,
the window closest to the lectern marks the coming of the promised Holy Spirit and the
subsequent birthday of the church (Acts 2). The Holy Spirit descends like a dove, with the
rush of a mighty wind, "appearing to them with tongues as of fire," upon the
waiting disciples. The mood of the disciples is one of receptivity, as the Spirit brings
power and understanding. forming in their midst a community of love which will grow into
the Church. In the middle of the window, formed from the flames of the Spirit, is the mast
of a ship, one of the earliest symbols for the Church.
